October Home Reset: 10 Things to Do Around Your Home This Fall

October is officially here, which means cooler temperatures, changing leaves, football, pumpkin patches, and plenty of reasons to spend more time at home.

Fall is also a great time to give your home a little attention before winter arrives. You don't need to tackle a huge renovation project. A few simple maintenance and organization tasks now can help keep your home comfortable, efficient, and ready for the months ahead.

Here are 10 things to add to your October home checklist.

1. Clean Out Your Gutters

Fall leaves can quickly clog gutters and downspouts. Clean them out and make sure water is flowing away from your home's foundation.

While you're up there, look for loose or damaged sections that may need attention.

2. Schedule an HVAC Checkup

Before you really need your heat, make sure your system is ready for cooler weather.

Replace your air filter and consider having your HVAC system professionally serviced. Catching a small problem now can save you from dealing with a heating issue on the coldest day of winter.

3. Check Your Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

With families spending more time indoors, fall is a great reminder to test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Replace batteries when needed and make sure everyone in the household knows what to do in case of an emergency.

4. Seal Up Drafty Areas

Feel a little breeze coming from a window or door?

Check your weatherstripping and caulking around windows and doors. Small gaps can allow heated or cooled air to escape and make your home less energy efficient.

5. Give Your Fireplace Some Attention

If you have a fireplace or wood-burning stove, make sure it's ready before your first fire of the season.

Have the chimney inspected and cleaned when appropriate, and make sure your fireplace is operating safely before using it.

6. Put Your Outdoor Furniture Away

Before freezing temperatures arrive, clean and store outdoor furniture, cushions, umbrellas, and other summer items.

It's also a good time to inspect your deck or patio for any repairs that may need to be addressed before winter.

7. Clean Out the Garage

Fall is the perfect time to tackle the garage.

Put away summer equipment, organize tools, donate items you no longer use, and make room for the things you'll need throughout the winter.

You may even discover that you have more space than you thought.

8. Take a Look at Your Roof

You don't need to climb onto your roof yourself. Instead, look from the ground for missing shingles, damaged areas, or anything that appears out of place.

If you notice a concern, have a qualified professional take a closer look before winter weather arrives.

9. Start a Fall Decluttering Project

Don't wait until you're preparing to move to start decluttering.

Choose one closet, room, or storage area each week and get rid of things you no longer need. By the time spring arrives, you'll already have a head start on a cleaner, more organized home.

And if selling your home is somewhere on your future to-do list, you'll be glad you started early.

10. Enjoy Your Home

Of course, home maintenance isn't the only thing October is about.

Make time to actually enjoy your home this season. Have friends over for dinner, make a fall dessert, sit around a fire pit, decorate your front porch, or spend an evening watching a movie with the windows cracked open to enjoy the cooler air.

Your home is more than an investment. It's where life happens.

Thinking About Making a Move?

Fall is also a great time to start thinking about your future real estate plans.

Maybe you've realized your current home doesn't have enough space. Maybe you're ready to downsize. Maybe you've been renting and are wondering if homeownership could be your next step.

You don't have to be ready to move tomorrow to start planning.

At The Mateyoke Group, we help buyers and sellers throughout Central Kentucky understand their options and create a plan that fits their goals.

Whether you're staying put and giving your home a little fall refresh or starting to think about what's next, October is a great month to take a fresh look at where you are and where you want to go.
